How to avoid chafing

After experiencing RAGBRAI and training for marathons, I’ve encountered the unavoidable chafing side effect.  Chafing is when your body rubs continuously (for hours) and it feels like burning or a sharp sting.  Very annoying.

I’ve experimented with a couple options and found Body Glide works for long runs.  It’s easy to apply, like deodorant, and I usually put a little on my legs and under my arms.  It’s not greasy and lasts for the entire length of marathons or for about 4 hours.  I guess you can apply it anywhere on your body but fortunately I have never had the need to venture elsewhere.

As for biking this past week, I have to give credit to Chamois Butt’r.  I have gone a long rides without some kind of lubricant and it is painful.  This is also a non-greasy substance and easy to put on.  I used it every day and washing it off with soap and water wasn’t a problem.

Other chafing avoidance tips:

  • Wear proper running attire. Synthetic materials that wick moisture away work the best like Dry Fit, Cool Max, and Under Armour. Cotton would be a big mistake.
  • Chafing can be caused by loose clothing, so it’s better to wear clothes that are tight. Again, Under Armour is a good choice.  If you’re the shy type, wear another shirt over your tight clothing.
  • For men only: Cover those nips!  Makes me cringe just looking at it.

Is that picture for real?!?! I’d be sitting down crying if I were him, not taking a drink of water…
