Hey Erosan,

I was definitely running a lot during the slow carb diet. Here is my DailyMile.com profile with the distances for each month: http://www.dailymile.com/people/johnhackbarth#ref=tophd

I guess it was around 35-40 miles/week...albeit, not very fast :)

How did the diet work for you the first time around?

so... What kind of distances were you running during the slow carb diet?

I've followed the diet successfully before, but this time around I am running, and eventually would like to prepare for a half marathon, but to be honest I am a little worried about the sustainability of this diet while running. Of course, since you mentioned an ultra, that must mean its ok, but I wanted to double check...

Hey Michelle,

I'm no expert, but I have done a few marathons before. The biggest difference I've seen in mine and listening to others is training well before trying one. It'll take awhile to get use to running that far and more importantly, that long of a time.

You'll want to see what works best for nutrition/energy and how your body holds up. Crossing training definitely helps prevent injury too.

Check out the blog post on Running Wall for some good marathon training books. I really enjoyed them and the author are definitely experts!

Amazing marathon in Omaha. I am so impressed. It's a bummer that your first half you felt so crummy, but you sure made up for it in the 2nd half. I haven't run a marathon yet because every time I run a half marathon it takes everything in me to do it and I think "How do people do double this?" Can you share some training tips on how you get from the half marathon distance to the marathon distance without injury?

I saw your comment on my wife's post about the TimberTrek and found your blog. Very impressive finish in Omaha. I don't think I've run a 6:14 mile since high school. Congratulations.

This is great to read before my marathon, John, although it scares me more than anything! I'm pretty sure I sweat more than anyone else alive.
